FESTIVAL101: Your Guide To South Africa's Music Scene

Festival 101

Discover South Africa’s Music Events

The South African music scene is packed with events, artists, and experiences competing for attention. Festival101 cuts through the noise with coverage that feels honest, authentic, and relatable. Festival101 helps newcomers understand the scene without assuming they already know every name.

Created about a year ago by established events players Michael Houghton and Gervais Martin, the website and social platform began with a simple goal. They wanted to keep people informed while honestly representing the events they covered.

Today, Festival101 has built a considerable following and developed partnerships with festivals. Yet, its community-first spirit remains unchanged.

Bringing Everyone Into the Fold

Ever felt like you needed to know the scene before joining it? Festival101 takes a different approach.

Newcomers can discover events without feeling like outsiders. Experienced festivalgoers can connect with familiar experiences from a fresh perspective.

The platform also brings humanity back to the performer and audience relationship. Local DJs such as Stephy Longueira receive opportunities to connect with their fanbase beyond casual social media posts or conversations in the booth.

“FESTIVAL 101 REMINDS US OF THE SPIRIT THAT GOT US ALL TO FALL IN LOVE WITH MUSIC IN THE FIRST PLACE.”

Festival101’s Guide to Getting Down

Looking for your next music experience? Festival101 highlights events across South Africa, each offering something different.

•    Wolfkop Weekender: A boutique annual festival along the Olifants River in the Citrusdal Valley, built around a weekend away in nature with music happening alongside it.
•    Teknotribe’s Dual Frequency: A recurring night at AND Club in Johannesburg, showcasing high-intensity Peaktime Techno.
•    Rumours by the Lake: An intimate two-night House and Techno camping festival at Elgin Grabouw Country Club, featuring serious international talent.
•    Paradisco: A Cape Town open-air disco and house party with an unapologetically feel-good dancefloor approach.
•    Bazique: A three-day camping celebration near Tulbagh, created through collaboration between party promoters, hundreds of artists, and an art-building community.
•    Gaian Dream: Organik’s annual flagship festival at Dieprivier Farm in Caledon, combining Psytrance, camping, and eco-consciousness.

Meet the Artists Behind the Music

Festival101 does more than cover events. It profiles the people making the music happen.

Stephy Longueira is a strong example. Her journey began while playing University-level tennis in Washington DC. Late-night DJ sessions with her roommate sparked an interest that eventually grew into something more.

Her sets move across Afro-Tech, Minimal, Desert, House, and Techno. Rather than following one fixed identity, she reads the room and adapts to the crowd.

From AfrikaBurn to Halo, Stephy lets her perfectionism show through her work rather than her ego. Festival101 also explores the harder realities behind her journey, including industry cliques, breaking through, and pressure.

The Secret Behind F101: Betastate

Founded in 2012 by Gervais Martin, Betastate grew into one of South Africa’s largest festival affiliate networks. It combines marketing with paid opportunities for young people in the events industry.

Its people-first affiliate model puts ticket sales into the hands of partygoers. It also connects festivals directly with the audiences supporting them. That same community focus shapes Festival101.

From Ultra to Twilight

The platform also covers some of South Africa’s biggest electronic music experiences:

•    Ultra South Africa: Africa’s largest electronic music festival, held annually across Cape Town and Johannesburg.
•    Earthdance: Part of a global gathering across more than 50 countries every September, with the Cape Town edition at Kromrivier Farm.
•    Twilight Festival: Now in its 27th edition, this long-running Psytrance event takes place at Pecan Bush Lodge outside Pretoria.

Pangea: Community Comes First

Pangea shows why Festival101 looks beyond lineups and ticket links.

This five-day gathering takes place in a mountain basin about two hours outside Cape Town. It combines electronic music, creative participation, art installations, and workshops.

Every attendee is expected to contribute something. Returning attendees follow a familiar process, while newcomers complete a community application. Not everyone gets accepted.

That honesty matters. Pangea represents a different side of South Africa’s electronic music scene, where community participation matters as much as the music.

Festival101 captures that full range, from major festivals to intimate gatherings and the people who bring them to life.
