More Than A Century In The Groove

From pioneering sound technology in 1918 to becoming a recognised name in DJ equipment, Ortofon DJ has spent more than a century advancing sound reproduction. Ortofon DJ Cartridges connect the physical movement of record grooves to the music DJs hear and share. Their precision engineering continues to support DJs across different playing styles.

Ortofon DJ

A Century Of Sound Innovation

Founded in Copenhagen in 1918, Ortofon developed technology that helped add soundtracks to silent movies in the early 1920s. In 1948, the company developed the first moving coil cartridge. Since then, Ortofon has developed and manufactured more than 300 different cartridges.

In 1979, Ortofon introduced its iconic Concorde design. Its integrated cartridge and headshell featured a standard bayonet mount, overhang and vertical adjustment facilities. This streamlined design simplified installation and replacement, quickly becoming a favourite among DJs worldwide.

How An Ortofon Cartridge Works

How does a small cartridge transform record grooves into music? An Ortofon cartridge converts stylus movement into an electrical signal. Your mixer, amplifier or audio interface then processes the signal for sound reproduction.

Three main components make this possible:
1.    Stylus: The only component that contacts the record, tracing its groove while withstanding considerable pressure.
2.    Cantilever: Connects the stylus to the generating system and needs to remain rigid and lightweight.
3.    Generating System: Converts cantilever movement within a magnetic field into an electrical signal. Movement direction and speed                determine the signal's amplitude and frequency.
