Finding Her Sound

So, how did Tyla find her way into hard techno?

She started DJing as a hobby and initially played hardgroove. Her first few gigs in Berlin also featured hardgroove sets, giving her valuable experience while developing her confidence behind the decks. Although she had always loved hard techno, she initially played music that suited the South African scene and its audiences.

Her direction began changing after experiencing the thriving hard techno culture across Europe. Being surrounded by the music, artists, and energy of the scene helped her recognise what truly connected with her. The experience opened her ears to a sound that felt more authentic and natural to her as an artist.

Today, her sets bring together fast-paced energy, industrial influences, and dark atmospheres. These elements have become an important part of her musical identity as she continues developing her sound and pushing herself creatively.

From South Africa to Europe

South Africa gave Tyla her start and helped her grow in confidence behind the decks. More importantly, the country’s underground electronic music scene taught her how to connect with a crowd rather than simply focus on playing tracks. Those early experiences helped shape her approach to performing and gave her an important foundation.

Then came the opportunity to take her sound overseas. Performing in Amsterdam and Berlin was surreal for Tyla because these are cities where many of the artists she looks up to perform. Being able to play in these destinations gave her a new perspective on what could be possible for her career.

Those experiences showed her that her music could connect with audiences beyond South Africa. While South Africa will always be home and the place where her journey began, Europe has helped her discover a sound that represents her more strongly.

What changed her musical direction?

Hive Festival 2025 played a major role in Tyla’s musical development. The festival introduced her to artists and hard techno styles that immediately connected with her. Experiencing those sounds in that environment helped reinforce the direction she wanted to take with her own music.

She continues finding inspiration in artists who push the genre forward and challenge the boundaries of hard techno. Watching their dedication and success motivates her to keep learning, improving, and developing her own sound. These influences continue encouraging her to evolve while staying connected to the style she loves.

Being a Woman in the Scene

Tyla is also honest about the challenges female DJs can face while building careers within the electronic music industry. She explains that female artists can sometimes have their success linked to appearance instead of talent, dedication, and hard work. This can create an unfair perception of what female artists bring to the scene.

She also warns about people offering opportunities with expectations attached. For aspiring female DJs, she believes it is important to recognise genuine opportunities and remain confident in their abilities. Setting boundaries and trusting your instincts can help artists protect themselves while building professional careers.

Her advice is simple:
•    Set boundaries
•    Trust your instincts
•    Stay professional
•    Keep learning
•    Believe in yourself

“South Africa gave me the confidence to become a performer, but Europe helped me discover the sound that truly represents who I am as an artist.”

Inspiring Other Woman

What does it mean to represent South Africa internationally?

For Tyla, it is something she feels incredibly proud of. South Africa has so much talent, and she wants to showcase where she comes from while continuing to build her career abroad. Representing her country on international stages gives her the opportunity to show audiences what South African artists can achieve.

She also hopes her journey encourages more women to explore DJing and music production. If her experiences can encourage even one young woman to believe that a career in electronic music is possible, she considers that something meaningful.

Her message to aspiring artists is straightforward: dream big, stay consistent, and never give up on yourself. She believes progress may sometimes feel slow, but continuing to learn, improve, and trust the process can eventually create new opportunities.

What's Next for Tyla?

Tyla has recently stepped into music production, creating another exciting chapter in her career. Producing her own music has always been a goal, as it gives her the opportunity to create music that reflects her own sound and identity as an artist.

She plans to release her first music over the coming months, giving fans something new to look forward to. She also looks forward to performing internationally, reaching new audiences, and continuing to develop her career across different destinations.

With her Turkey debut on the horizon, there is plenty more to come from this rising South African artist. As she continues performing and developing her production skills, Tyla is building a career that remains rooted in her passion for hard techno and her determination to stay true to herself.

“Success doesn't happen overnight—but with passion, hard work, and perseverance, the opportunities will come.”
